Reverence and Ritual
Mar 05 2009 01:09:45 This thread discusses the Content article: Reverence and Ritual
“Reverence and Ritual” explores the history and meaning behind ritual washing/cleansing, looking at two seemingly very different sources: The highly symbolic, sacred ceremonials that are an integral part of so many world religions, and the unwanted, neurotic rituals performed by many sufferers of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The film is an aural and visual montage made up of still images interviews with different religious leaders and three sufferers of OCD, excerpts from religious texts and modern theories in psychoanalysis, including an essay by Freud. There are many undeniable, even uncanny parallels, especially obvious in the meticulous detail and rigid order Both Obsessive Compulsive’s and the devout’s acute examples of cleansing brings up questions about the origins of ritual as a basic human necessity. |
